Babies Love Handknits

Hello Mr. Lazy,

I hope everything is going well in Cowtown and you are preparing for my visit. I am a demanding guest.

Here is the baby sweater I finished recently:

It is for Anna’s baby girl, whose baby shower will probably be pretty soon (which means I should get working on at least one more item!). Babies love handknits, after all.

Here are the knitterly details:

Pattern: Coffee Bean Cardi
Yarn: Cascade Superwash sport weight in purple and pink shades.
Size: I didn’t worry too much about this – I think it will fit a 4-6 month old.
Buttons: pink and shiny from Queens Fabric and Buttons
Modifications: None!

Best Dressed Bear!

Mr. Lazy,

In response to your knitting request, I present the following:

This is a top-down improvised raglan especially designed for Mr. Simon Bear. I made it with: Patons’ Kroy sock yarn in navy blue, and Plymouth Yarn’s Happy Feet sock yarn in a slightly variegated red.

I think it has a charming school boy feel, especially with the short sleeves, and is much improved over that ill-fitting white sweater he was wearing.

He is looking forward to being the best dressed bear at your library’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic next month! I hope you will have an official award and ceremony for him!

Extremely Loud = Extremely Good

Hello Mr. Lazy,

That show that looks like Eco-Challenge looks good!

I forgot to tell you that I saw my third movie of the year last weekend: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It was about a kid whose dad died in 9/11, and it was very well-made. It was not schmaltzy or sentimental. I would recommend it, though it doesn’t appear that everyone agrees (it only gets 45% on Rotten Tomatoes).

You know what movie gets 97% on Rotten Tomatoes? The Artist That remains my Oscar pick for best picture, and I really want the French dude to win best actor. You need to see it already!

If you only read one picture book this year, it should be Extra Yarn.

Extra Yarn is a modern version of the old picture book you liked, Something Absolutely Enormous.  It is excellent.

A is for…. Alex!

Hello Mr. Lazy,

I apologize that I haven’t written in a little while.

Regarding your knitting request, how could I possibly resist such a fine-looking bear in such a sad-looking sweater? That colour and shape are doing nothing for his figure! I will see what I can do in that department.

Speaking of knitting, I have finished my secret project!

It is a vest for my friend Anna’s son, Alex. I knit Alex two sweaters before he was even born, and now he is 2, going on 2.5. Anna is expecting another baby sometime in the spring, and there will probably be a baby shower sometime before then.

I wanted to make something for Alex, as he likely not to get as many gifts as his fetus-sibling. I will also make something pink for the baby, not because I know that the baby is a girl, but because I feel like knitting with pink. I am hedging my bets!

I am hoping that, because Alex’s parents are super smart, Alex will be too, and he will recognize the letter “a” on the front.

The knitter-ly details are as follows:

Pattern: Kid’s Vest from More Last-Minute Knitted Gifts

Size: somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 years old (hopefully Alex-sized)

Yarn: Approximately two balls of Mission Falls 136 Superwash (colour 030) – sadly, this yarn company is no longer in business. It is shame, because their stuff was so nice.

A very simple and easy pattern, but I had never done duplicate-stitching before. It did take some practice to get it right. The instructions in the book weren’t great, so I resorted to my tried-and-true favourite: Knitting in Plain English.

This counts as my #1 project of the year. Only 11 more to go!

Chest: 6 inches from armpit to armpit
Length: 4 inches from neck to midsection
Arms: 6 inches all the way around
Neck: 8 inches all the way around

Happy 1/2 BDay to Me!

Mr. Lazy,

You forgot to wish me a happy 1/2 bday! It is exactly 6 months until my real bday.

For my big day, I requested the Scottish pancakes pictured above. I’m not sure what makes them Scottish, but they are dee-lish.

Besides eating those pancakes, this is what I have done this weekend (so far):

1. I finished the Steve Jobs book which I recommend. It was very interesting, and makes me want to be a full Mac convert.

2. I tried to start the new Stephen King novel as my second book of 2012, but I don’t really like it so far. It is too science fiction-y. The reviews are so good though, that it makes me want to try harder to like it.

3. I finished the knitting on my secret project, but I have run into a snafu on the finishing. It should be done soon once I can figure out a solution.

4. I saw an excellent movie called Rabbit Hole from last year. Nicole Kidman’s face is plumped up with facial fillers, but it is still an excellent acting job (and I don’t like Nicole Kidman). You should watch it.

By the way, please do not pollute our nice blog with any more of Jim Chapman’s garbage.

What have you been doing lately?

I have been reading about Steve Job’s tantrums , and I am also giving my secret knitting project a bath (pictured above).

My goal is to be done both the Jobs book and the knitting project by Sunday night. Why do I put a timeline on everything, Mr. Lazy, when you are content to laze about letting things get done at their own pace?

A Midnight Update from a Sleepy Miss Giggles

Good evening, Mr. Lazy,

It’s good that your resolutions are going well, and that you have adopted another one (I thought your previous list was a bit lazy). I don’t really like risotto, though, so maybe you can pick a Miss Giggles-friendly dish for your next one.

My resolutions are going okay, though I have not read any more of the Steve Jobs book. I have been distracted by the following:

1. Working on my secret knitting project.

2. Watching the DVD of Jamie’s Kitchen while I am working on número 1. I prefer to watch people cook on TV rather than to do it myself.

3. Looking at the program book called Savage Beauty which was an exhibition of Alexander McQueen’s work at the MET. He was a fashion designer who committed suicide last year, in case you didn’t know that, Mr. Lazy. Anyway, the book is very nice (picture above is from it), and makes me wish I lived in NYC so I could have gone to see the exhibit.

4. Working for a living.

I want to get back to the Jobs’ book soon, though, and also see my first movie of the year.

New (and Mysterious) Knitting Project

Mr. Lazy,

Bossypants is excellent. You will like it. It is also a quick read which will get you off on the right foot, as you have 51 more books to read once it’s done.

It is -25C today (with the windchill), which is the perfect weather to drink tea and start a new knitting project (pictured above). It’s a secret project for now, but it is a pattern from one of those two lovely books, and I have a feeling you will love it!

Also, I think you are right about the cupcake trend turning into a donut trend (macaroons never stood a chance). Jane Brocket even made her own donuts!

OK, it’s a grand shame that I have to work tomorrow. So I need to sign off.
